6A – Identifying Opportunities in Economic & Regulatory Trends

Opportunity 1:
SARS Stung the Global Economy. The Coronavirus Is a Greater Menace.
Found on the New York Times

International companies that rely on Chinese factories to make their products and depend on Chinese consumers for sales are warning of costly problems. Due to the majority of manufacturers residing in China, this disease is stopping businesses across the world. This problem in China can lead to economic opportunity in other countries. Factories can be built, and jobs can be created. This would impact business owners, people in need of jobs, and economies of the countries being built in.

I think most people don’t think there is an opportunity from this. It is very risky, but I consider myself a risky person which is why others might not see this as an opportunity.

Opportunity 2:
Supply, demand and 'geopolitical tensions': How oil prices rise
Found on ABC News

This article talks about rising oil prices and the causes behind them. Rising oil prices would greatly affect nearly all industries, from factories to gas stations to even the car industry. With so much change, to will definitely affect opportunities. If prices are rising, maybe it would be a good time to get into the industry. There isn’t really a prototypical customer with this. Everyone is affected so there’s not a specific type. In addition, you could look at this the other way; if oil prices are rising, maybe it would be good to get involved in renewable energy sources such as the electric car industry.

My brother is an engineer and he greatly talks to me about the car industry and the effects oil prices have on it. In addition, we talked about rising prices in my environmental science class.

Opportunity 3:
Federal Action on Climate
Center for climate and energy solutions

Given the great speed of climate change and the immense negative affects it is having on our country, it leads me to believe there is opportunity in this area. By creating products that are not detrimental to the environment and can replace certain things we currently have, it would be very successful. This would be good for EVERYONE as this is our planet and everyone needs to help preserve it. This might be difficult to actually accomplish as things that are better for the environment tend to be more expensive.

I saw this opportunity from my environmental science class. Also, as a teenager I am not as worried about finances as adults which is why the greater prices don’t bother me as much and thus is probably the reason more people don’t seek this opportunity.

Opportunity 4:
Patient privacy in the era of medical computer networks: a new paradigm for a new technology
Europe PMC
With the advance in technology, there is a higher risk of people finding ways to steal data on your personal information. As a result, there is a huge need/opportunity to create a software to prevent data breaches. This would greatly benefit everyone as everyone is at risk at getting data stolen from them. This is definitely a do-able thing to do, you just need to be very smart and know how to code well (easier said than done, I know).
I know thousands of people are currently working on this opportunity belief at the moment. It ios definitely a good field to get involved in.

I enjoyed reading about your different opportunity choices. I really like the one about rising oil prices because I think it is a real current problem that effects just about everyone. I would've liked to see links to where you found the articles. This would've helped with better understanding the opportunities. But, other that that I think it was a really great entry.

  2. Aaron,

I definitely agree there is a potential opportunity for other countries to grow in business with coronavirus being a massive issue in China. As many counties depend on China for business, this fall in production from the country gives other countries the opportunity to step in and take their place. I agree this is a very risky opportunity to pursue as the full effect of the coronavirus is unknown; it could only last a few more weeks or many months. Because of how risky this opportunity is, and how uncertain the effects of the virus are, I personally would not consider taking advantage of this opportunity.

  3. Hi Aaron!

I really liked all the opportunities you chose, specifically the Coronavirus one. It has been such a huge topic in these recent weeks that it is a great example to use. It can definitely affect business and our economy overall. Great post and I really enjoyed reading all the opportunities!

  4. Hey Aaron,
I really like your take regarding the Coronavirus and how that hinders Chinese manufacturing of goods, and especially how it plays an effect internationally. The question at hand is whether or not if the virus would be a factor long enough to the extent where offshore production of goods is led towards other countries that would need the labor as a whole.
