9A - testing the hypothesis part 2

Who: Everyone at the University of Florida has at least one thing in common and it’s that we are all Gators. With that being said, we are also all extremely different and unique individuals and what one person’s needs are may be completely different from another’s. After interviewing five people without cars, it seemed pretty clear that it made no different to them whether or not we had more on campus parking.

What: The needs differ from insiders to outsiders on one sole cause: whether or not they have cars/there friends have cars. If neither they nor their friends have cars, it makes no difference to them whether or not the on-campus parking is fixed.

Why: The underlying cause of the outsiders' need different than people who are inside the boundary is based on their affiliation to motor vehicles. If neither they nor their friends have cars, it makes no difference to them whether or not the on-campus parking is fixed. In fact, two of the individuals I interviewed actually said the complete opposite where they would rather the parking not be fixed as they enjoy how campus is so walkable and would prefer to keep cars out of the beautiful campus.

Inside the Boundary
Outside the Boundary
Who is in?
Students with cars, students with friends/roommates who have cars, people with a higher disposable income.
Who is not?
Students without cars and without friends with cars, people with less disposable income
What the need is?
The need for more on-campus parking for students to be able to drive to class. Can be in the form of underground parking garages beneath buildings/dorms.
What the need is not?
The need is clearly not met but all and is not a necessary aspect of college life. It would just add the convenience of the campus and of having a car.
Why the need exists?
There are not nearly enough central campus parking spots. As a result, students are skipping class or are having to walk long distances just to learn.
Alternative explanations?
Some people don’t see a need for more on-campus parking and are actually against the idea of adding more to preserve the campus’s beauty.

  1. Aaron,

Great job! It definitely makes sense that even though students share many similarities, most students who do not have cars fall outside the boundary you have defined. I would even expand that to include students who have a friend with a car that they rely on to run errands, such as for groceries. They may also fall inside your boundary, and be receptive to your opportunity.

  2. Hey Aaron,
I couldn't agree more with your idea. There needs to be more availability for students who commute to go to class. More parking as a whole for all benefits everyone, as those who fit outside the boundary might need a ride somewhere from a friend, and a car is easily accessible. No one should ever have to go out of their way to go to class.

  3. Aaron,
Your discovery in your post is very interesting. As someone with a car, I always felt like everyone would want there to be more parking around and on campus. However, for people who live near by, it does make sense that they prefer campus not be so crowded with cars and how nice and peaceful it is to walk. That is definitely something to keep in mind when executing your business. If you are able to create a solution that solves the people with a car's problem while not upsetting the people who do not like them, it would definitely make it even more enjoyable. Great post!

  4. Hi Aaron,
Very well organized post! I think you dissected this issue very well in this post as it is extremely prevalent on this campus. There is no downside to more parking as that would lead to more decal sales for TAPS. Some of my best friends who do not have a car even say they think its an issue which just furthers the notion that this is a great idea and needs to be implemented as soon as possible for the good of the student body of this great college.

  5. Hey Aaron,

Awesome in depth interviews. I definitely think that the need for your opportunity is varied across people with different skin sensitivity levels and shoe buying patterns, as evident by the interviews above. On a personal level, I think I could definitely make use of your product since the boots I buy as an equestrian require extensive, painful breaking in. Maybe the niche market of equestrianism is one that you can look into!
